The Credit Suisse bailout in hindsight: not a bitter pill to swallow, but a case to follow
Our CEO, Prof. Dr. Pascal Böni, and our Board of Directors member, Prof. Dr. Heinz Zimmermann, were honored to receive the ZKB Best Paper Award 2024 at the SIX Exchange in Zurich. Their work was recognized by the Swiss Society for Financial Market Research in a ceremonial award presentation.
In March 2023, Credit Suisse was bailed out through emergency law, excluding shareholder rights and violating basic monetary principles. This led to a 209 billion Swiss franc support plan and a state-coordinated merger with UBS. By August 2023, UBS repaid the plan in full and reported a record quarterly profit of 29 billion USD.
The authors propose expanding supervision with market-based risk indicators, increasing unweighted capital ratios to reflect large bank risks, introducing ex-ante paid liquidity options, and urging a public debate on taxpayers’ willingness to finance the “too-big-to-fail” risk of large banks.
