Es ist nun ein Jahr her, dass die Credit Suisse im Rahmen einer staatlich orchestrierten Notfusion mit der UBS gerettet wurde und damit das Branding eines Instituts mit einer 167-jährigen Geschichte aufgegeben hat.
Pascal Böni (Universität Tilburg, Niederlande) und Heinz Zimmermann (Universität Basel, Schweiz) bewerten die CS-Rettung kritisch und beleuchten Schlüsselfragen wie bailout-induzierte Vermögenstransfers, die „Too-big-to-fail“-Herausforderung, die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Bankenrettungen, die optimale Höhe des Eigenkapitals der Banken, die doktrinäre Trennung von Solvenz und Liquidität und die Vorteile von ex-ante-marktbasierten Bankenfragilitätsindikatoren anstelle von Ex-post-Rechnungslegungsindikatoren.

It is now a year since Credit Suisse was bailed out in a state-orchestrated emergency merger with UBS, thereby abandoning the branding of an institution with a 167year history.
Pascal Böni (Tilburg University, Netherlands) and Heinz Zimmermann (University of Basel, Switzerland) critically evaluate the CS bailout, shedding light on key issues such as bailout-induced wealth transfers, the “too-big-to-fail” challenge, the likelihood of bank bailouts, the optimal level of bank equity, the doctrinal separation of solvency and liquidity, and the benefits of ex-ante market-based bank fragility indicators rather than ex-post accounting indicators.
